Business Website: Why Relying Only on Social Media Is a Mistake

June 16, 20265 min readOren Knaan

Social networks are rented space. Your website is owned by you. That difference matters more than people think.

Many small business owners come to me and say: "I have 3,000 followers on Instagram, so why do I need a website?"

It's a good question. The answer is that your Instagram belongs to Instagram. They can change the algorithm and the organic reach of your posts drops by 80% and there's nothing you can do about it. They can close your account. They can go bankrupt.

Your website, on the other hand, is simply there. Without anyone else deciding for you. About building a presence that reflects who you are - I wrote here.

What's the difference in practice

Your own website

  • Owned by you
  • Found through SEO
  • Works 24/7 without you posting
  • Builds an asset over time
  • Presents all your services
  • Can be linked to from Google

Social networks

  • Belong to another company
  • Depend on an algorithm
  • Don't rank on Google
  • Require constant posting
  • Limited for long content
  • Can't be linked for SEO

Who searches for you on Google

There's a big difference between someone who discovers you while scrolling and someone who searches for you on Google.

While scrolling, they weren't looking for anything. Maybe they'll buy later, maybe not. On Google they typed "NVC practitioner in Haifa" or "website building for spiritual businesses." They already know what they want. They just want to find the right person.

SEO brings you the second kind. And only a website makes SEO possible.

How many years does SEO take to have an effect?

Usually 3-6 months to see initial traffic, and 12-18 months for stable ranking on competitive keywords. It's a long-term investment. A website built right in 2025 will keep bringing clients in 2030 at no additional cost.

Social networks are a marketing tool, not a home

I'm not saying to abandon the networks. They're very useful for building an audience, for ongoing content, for exposure. But they need to lead people to your website, not be the final destination.

A good way to use the networks is to post content there that points people to read full articles on your website. That way you stay present on the networks and also build your digital asset. The next step is to market it without compromising your values.

Questions and answers about a business website

Why does a business need a website?

A website is your digital asset, yours and not another platform's, and it lets SEO bring clients without paying for every click.

Unlike Instagram, which can change your reach overnight, the website doesn't depend on the decisions of another company. A business with a website will show up on Google the moment someone searches, and an Instagram profile can't do that. The website also works 24 hours a day and answers questions even while you sleep.

What's the difference between a website and Instagram?

Instagram belongs to Instagram, your website belongs to you.

They can change the algorithm, limit reach, or close an account. When Facebook's algorithm changed in 2018, businesses that relied only on it saw a 70-80% drop in exposure overnight. A business with a website and SEO didn't take that hit.

Can you run a business with only Facebook?

You can, but it's building on ground someone else holds and can change at any moment.

When the algorithm changes your reach can drop 80% overnight. Clients who searched Google for 'NVC practitioner in Haifa' won't find a Facebook page in the results. The networks are useful for exposure, but they can't replace a website with SEO.

What is SEO and why does it matter?

SEO is search engine optimization that makes your website appear in the results when people search for your service.

It's free traffic from people who have already searched for what you offer. SEO takes 6-12 months to build, but once it works it brings clients without you spending money on every click. A website built right with SEO in 2025 will keep bringing clients in 2030.

How much does it cost to build a website for a small business?

A basic Wix website costs 50-100 dollars a year, a professional WordPress website with custom design costs 3,000-8,000 shekels and up.

The decision depends on needs: if you want serious SEO and a unique design, WordPress is a worthwhile investment. If you want to start quickly on a minimal budget, Wix is enough for the first stage. You don't have to invest everything the first time.

Which is better, WordPress or Wix?

Wix is easy to maintain on your own; WordPress is more flexible and allows advanced SEO.

For businesses that want control and serious SEO, WordPress is better. Wix suits businesses that want to manage things alone without a developer's help and don't need advanced capabilities. About 43% of the world's websites are built on WordPress, including large ones, which points to its flexibility.

Is a one-page website enough for a small business?

Sometimes yes, depending on the goal and the number of services offered.

For a business that offers one service and wants people to get in touch, a one-page website works great. It limits SEO because every additional page is an opportunity to rank for a different keyword. But a clean, finished one-page website is better than a website with 15 empty pages.

How long does it take to build a website?

A basic website takes one to two weeks, a custom website 3-6 weeks.

The factor that slows things down most is the content that comes from the client, texts and images. Clients who arrive with content ready get their website weeks before clients who wait to finish writing. If you're planning to build a website, it's worth starting to gather texts and images right now.

What's the difference between a website and a landing page?

A landing page is a single page for a specific action, a website is a broad asset that presents the whole business.

A landing page converts better for a specific campaign because all the focus is on one action. A website builds trust over time and lets visitors get to know you before they reach out. For most businesses, a combination of the two is the right approach.

Does Google rank an Instagram profile?

Sometimes an Instagram profile appears for name searches, but it isn't ranked on service keywords.

No one searches 'NVC practitioner Tel Aviv' and finds an Instagram profile in the answer. Google ranks pages with text content that answers questions, and that's what websites do and social networks can't.

What is a Google Business Profile?

The profile that appears on Google Maps when people search for a business, free and important for businesses with a local audience.

It works together with the website, not instead of it. When someone searches 'practitioner near me' they first see the profile on Google Maps, and then go to the website for more details. Together they create a strong presence that brings clients.

Is it worth building a website on Canva?

Not for a serious business website; Canva is very limited in SEO and gives no control over the code.

It's worth using it for graphics and content design, not as a website platform. A small investment in Wix or WordPress is far better in terms of SEO capabilities and design flexibility.

What is a domain and why does it matter to have my own?

Your address on the web, for example yourname.co.il, and when you have your own domain you build SEO under that address for years to come.

A 3-year-old domain with SEO built up ranks better than a new domain. If you wait to buy a domain, you delay building your digital authority. A .co.il domain costs 30-60 shekels a year, and it's worth buying early.

Is a WordPress website secure?

Secure when maintained properly: regular plugin updates, automatic backups, and hosting on a quality server.

Most hacks of WordPress websites happen because of old plugins that weren't updated or weak passwords, not because of vulnerabilities in WordPress itself. Quality hosting with security protections, regular updates, and a strong password are 90% of what you need.
